Homecoming 2016 – you are my queen

Quando per la prima volta Linda , con grande entusiasmo, mi ha accennato a “Homecoming “, non capivo a cosa si riferisse. Poi mi ha spiegato ed allora ho capito perchè tanta emozione .

Probabilmente voi già sapete di cosa  si tratta ma, sinceramente, io ne ignoravo l’esistenza.

L’Homecoming è il tradizionale evento  con cui la scuola da il benvenuto  ai ragazzi delle scuole secondarie ( high school ) negli Stati Uniti, Canada e Filippine. E’ strutturato con diverse attività  organizzate proprio per gli studenti , con altrettanti eventi di carattere culturale ed in alcuni casi con  la tradizionale parata nelle strade della città. Alla fine della settimana dell’homecoming  però c’è l’evento più atteso : l’homecoming dance cioè il tradizionale ballo (quello per intenderci  che  noi siamo soliti vedere nei film in cui i ragazzi scelgono  e chiedono alla ragazza di poterla accompagnare al ballo). L’evento si tiene normalmente nella palestra della scuola o in locali attrezzati e decorati proprio per accogliere il ballo con musica dal vivo oppure con un disc jockey. Sotto molti aspetti diciamo che l’homecoming è il prom (il ballo di fine anno molto più formale ) nella versione autunnale.

La settimana di eventi prevede anche l’elezione della cosiddetta Homecoming court ( la corte dell’homecoming ) in cui un re e una regina  sono scelti insieme ad un principe ed una principessa  proprio per simboleggiare il ruolo degli studenti nella scuola durante l’evento.

When I was told the first time from Linda about the homecoming, I totally ignored the meaning of it. Then , as soon as , she told me what exactly it was, I could clearly understand why she as so excited about it.

You probably know what the “homecoming is ” but I have never heard abut it before.

Homecoming is the tradition of welcoming back students of a school. It is a tradition in many high schools in the United States, Canada and the Philippines. It usually includes activities for students, such as sports, cultural events, and a parade through the streets of the city or town. The culminating event of the week (for high schools) is the homecoming dance  – a formal or informal event  either at the school or an off-campus location . The venue is decorated, and either a disc jockey or band is hired to play music. In many ways, it is a fall prom.

During this week you’ll also hear about the homecoming court and homecoming  queen. The meaning of homecoming queen is the election of a female student to represent the student body of a school at homecoming events. Schools traditionally elect a queen and a king, as well as princes and princesses who serve on the court.

La High School  di Linda, sul  proprio sito, trasmette in diretta la cerimonia dell’homecoming e così, con grande emozione,ho potuto assistere comodamente seduta sul divano di casa mia a questo primo evento che è culminato con la presentazione di Linda, in qualità di Exchange student, di Homecoming queen accompagnata dal suo homecoming king Fredrik ( l’altro exchange student danese ).

Inutile raccontarvi quanta emozione ma soprattutto quanta voglia di abbracciarla, coccolarla e stringerla vedendola li così bella, emozionata e lontana da casa .

…ma ho ancora tante cose da raccontarvi  : la scuola, la partita di football, le gare di cross country, le vacanze e le gite con la famiglia …insomma questa avventura è solo all’inizio anche se a me sembra già trascorso moltissimo tempo.  Missing you, honey !

Linda’s high school broadcastes live the homecoming event on its webpage and and I was so honoured and glad to enjoy the whole ceremony which ended with the election of Linda ( because of her being an exchange student ) as homecoming queen ands Fredrik ( the Danish exchange student ) as homecoming king.

No need to tell you how happy I was and above all my desire to hug and kiss her who is so far away from home : in anyu case  she was so beautiful and emotioned  and I’m so glad she had a great time.

..so many other things to tell you about her school, the football match, the coss country meets, holidays and trips with her beloved family ….Linda adventure has just started even if to me it seems a lot of time since I’ve hugged her . Missing you, honey!
